New State Arena

An effort is underway to develop a new statewide equestrian complex near Camden, SC. A group is actively working to develop plans and secure funding for this venture. Larry Westfall had a booth at the Expo showing the very impressive preliminary plans. The planning group is working to obtain a grant of SCPRT property for constructing this complex. If interested in obtaining more information or participating in this effort, contact Larry Westfall @ lewipra@yahoo.com.

Trails

The SCHC has a Trails Committee dedicated to preserving and improving trail riding opportunities for SC equestrians. This committee is actively working to represent the best interests of this very large group of equestrians.

South Carolina Scheduled Trail Rides

SC Trail Rides 2008

South Eastern Equestrian Trails Conference: The 2008 conference will be hosted by the SC Horsemen’s Council. It will be held in Charleston, SC on July 31-Aug 2, 2008. The SCHC has enlisted the support of most of the state and federal agencies in the state who manage equestrian trails. A lot of planning is in process. Make your reservations now at the Sheraton Hotel in North Charleston.

H. Cooper Black Recreational Area: Site Manager, Bonnie Lewis, of SCPRT, continues to make improvements to this large equestrian oriented facility. Through her efforts it has become one of the premier sites in South Carolina for equestrians to ride the well-maintained trails, stable their horses overnight, and enjoy excellent camping facilities.

Sandhills State Forest: Brian Davis is the new Sandhills State Forest Director, replacing Forest Murphy, who retired last year after 34 years of service. Cecil Watkins is representing the equestrian interests on the trails advisory committee. This committee is composed of advocates for off road motorized vehicle use, bicycle riding, hiking, bird watching, and equestrian usage.

Croft State Park: Jim Edwards has been working with Park Management to make trail improvements.

Francis Marion Trails: Jim Edwards and Butch Kennedy represented the SCHC by participating in the trails clean up day for Francis Marion National Forest.

American Horse Council Chat Site

"This chat group provides a communication link between trail groups across the country.  We hope that South Carolina Trail riders will share some of their success stories and use the board as a way to find information.  We have found that many issues are common in each state and if we can draw on others’ experiences, sometimes it prevents us from re-inventing the wheel." Membership: The South Carolina Horsemen's Council is non-profit and totally controlled by horse people. To continue the goals we have set, the council needs a commitment from you and your organizations. We need you at the decision making table. The council needs your organization behind our efforts. To be a strong voice in South Carolina we must have all equine owners speaking together.

We urge you to make a pledge to stand up for the equine industry by joining and supporting your statewide Horsemen’s Council.
